Planned Obsolescence

So what is this “planned obsolescence”? It is defined as business strategy that intentionally designs products to become obsolete. Thus, achieving the goal of encouraging customers to continue to buy the same product over and over.

What’s the problem? As companies continue this practice whether it be in tech or fashion, it contributes to mass waste, ultimately harming our environment and increasing pollution.

What can you do? Doing research on companies to learn their quality of their products is paramount. Spending the extra dollar on something just so it lasts longer is worth it. Prioritize longevity and value, it matters.

Companies guilty of this practice:

  • Apple

  • Lightbulb manufacturers

  • Microsoft

  • Fast Fashion brands: Shein, H&M

  • Car manufacturers
